Biography
Barbara Peacock (born 1954) is an American photographer known for long-term documentary projects that examine everyday life in the United States through intimate, human-centered narratives. Raised in Westford, Massachusetts, she studied fine arts and later photography and filmmaking, developing an observational approach grounded in empathy, patience, and close engagement with her subjects. Her personal work often explores family, community, domestic space, and the subtleties of ordinary American culture.
Her 33-year project “Hometown,” completed in 2016, documents the people, rituals, and social rhythms of the New England town where she grew up. The series presents decades of quiet change, portraying small-town American life with intimacy and emotional depth. Peacock’s acclaimed project “American Bedroom” (2016–2023) expands this perspective to a national scale. Photographing people across all regions of the United States in their bedrooms, she created an anthropological portrait of contemporary America, revealing vulnerability, individuality, and the diverse ways people construct private space and personal identity.
Alongside her documentary work, Peacock has had a successful career as a commercial and editorial photographer, working for major brands and publications. She has received numerous honors, including major photography grants and awards recognizing both her artistic and social impact. Peacock continues to work from her home base in Maine, creating projects that explore the poetry of daily life and the universal human search for connection, belonging, and meaning.
