Description

DMT is the first major publication by Vancouver-born artist Jeremy Shaw, published by Presentation House Gallery. The book serves as a meticulous frame-by-frame record of his video installation of the same name, in which eight individuals were filmed while smoking the powerful hallucinogen Dimethyltryptamine. Shaw’s work investigates the point at which language fails; as the subjects attempt to communicate their experiences, they are reduced to stutters, sighs, and silence. By presenting the video as a 400-page sequence, the book allows the viewer to physically manipulate the passage of time, turning a high-speed chemical trip into a slow-motion study of the human face in a state of “otherness.” It is a foundational work in Shaw’s career-long exploration of the sublime and the limits of social communication.
