Across 93 colour photographs, Roy turns the familiar codes of leisure—temporary accommodation, scenic settings, poised appearances—into an elaborate study of desire, performance and the expectations attached to romance.
Roy works through self-portraiture and carefully constructed situations. She appears before the camera as both author and character, occupying scenes whose cinematic polish never fully suppresses their unease. Her distinctive palette heightens the friction: chic surfaces meet artificial glamour, humour shades into menace, and recognisable places seem to drift toward fiction. Context is not a backdrop here but the mechanism of the work. Gesture, costume and setting quietly establish motives that the images never need to state outright.
The book’s significance lies in this sustained ambiguity. The publisher now lists the title as out of print, adding bibliographic context to a work whose primary interest remains the precision of its image-making and the uneasy wit of its premise.
