In Double Happiness, Taiwanese photographer Chien-Chi Chang examines the commercial machinery of brokered marriage. His subject is a system through which women from Vietnam and other economically poorer Asian countries are brought to Taiwan as prospective wives. Women are presented to participating men; when a proposal is accepted, the marriage may take place within three days, with brokers overseeing the process from selection through ceremony.

The project began in 1994 as a personal response to pressure from Chang’s family to marry. His early photographs followed Taiwan’s mainstream wedding industry and the ways it fashioned strangers into brides and grooms. Returning to the subject over nearly a decade, he shifted his attention toward the industry’s margins and its transnational arrangements. That development gives the book both the urgency of personal dissent and the depth of sustained documentary inquiry.

Chang does not confine the narrative to the wedding day. The photographs move through selection, applications, paperwork, and ceremony, tracing marriage as a compressed sequence of decisions and administrative acts. Interviews with brokers, men, and women accompany the images, as do examples of the exchanges through which prospective partners assess one another. This combination of photographs and speech makes visible not only the participants but also the procedures and language structuring their encounters.
