Esther Bubley / Bus Journey gathers photographs made during a 1943 assignment that sent Esther Bubley by bus through the American Midwest and South. Roy Stryker of the Office of War Information asked her to record how bus lines served a country reorganized by war: moving troops and war workers while maintaining intercity travel for people whose options were restricted by wartime rationing. The project therefore treats the bus not simply as a vehicle, but as part of the civic infrastructure through which national policy and private necessity met.

More than 140 photographs are arranged across three chapters within the book’s 104 pages. That structure gives the assignment a sustained editorial form, allowing the cumulative record to carry as much weight as any individual photograph. Bubley’s subject is both specific and expansive: a transportation network observed in operation, and the range of human experience encountered within it. The commission’s practical brief becomes an account of mobility, labor, and ordinary life under exceptional historical conditions.

This was Bubley’s first major assignment; she later contributed forty photo essays to Life.
