(MEME)PUBLISHING is a Japanese publishing imprint documented through Hideya Ishima’s photobook ONOMICHI. Its archived online shop announced the book for July 2021, and the shop’s 2021 business notice listed Tokyo as its location and Yosuke Mori as its contact. The available evidence establishes activity in 2021, rather than a confirmed founding date.
ONOMICHI brings together photographs made in Onomichi alongside the production of Ren Sudo’s film Gyakko. Ishima draws on the film’s characters and the town’s remembered past to explore the relationship between photographic observation and cinematic fiction. The publisher’s original listing specifies a 96-page hardcover, 148 × 210 mm, with colour and black-and-white photographs, in a first printing of 300 copies. It credits Moe Nishiyama as editor and Yosuke Mori as designer.
The book appeared in 2021 and is also documented in a 2022 second printing. These dates identify different printings of the same work and should be checked against the copy’s colophon. The historical shop is publishing-meme.stores.jp; its present trading status is unconfirmed. A complete catalogue, the imprint’s founders, and an official social account have not been independently established.
