Photographer
Viviane Sassen & Emanuele Coccia
Viviane Sassen (born 1972, Amsterdam) is a Dutch artist who works across fashion photography and fine art. Her early childhood in Kenya left an enduring mark on her visual imagination, and she later studied fashion design before turning to photography at the Utrecht School of the Arts (HKU). While she is the primary photographer in this record, her recent collaborations often involve Italian philosopher Emanuele Coccia, whose writings engage with the intertwined nature of images, nature, and the human condition.
Sassen’s photographs are known for their vivid, almost hyper-saturated color, geometric rigor, and a surreal interplay of light, shadow, and fragmented bodies. She frequently transforms human figures into abstract shapes using silhouettes, reflections, and careful positioning, making the familiar uncanny. Her time in East Africa surfaces as an undercurrent of displaced landscapes and unexpected body forms, yet she deliberately avoids documentary straightforwardness. The result is a hybrid language that sits between staged and spontaneous, commercial and personal.
A landmark that brings together Sassen and Coccia is the collaborative book “Modern Alchemy” (curated and published through ICA, the Institute of Contemporary Art, in 2023). The volume integrates a sequence of Sassen’s images with Coccia’s text, exploring photography’s ability to transmute everyday reality into something speculative. Critics have praised the openness of the dialogue between the two, noting how image and text resonate rather than illustrate each other. This project showcases Sassen’s commitment to the photobook as a composite medium, where sequencing and layout are as essential as the individual images.
Sassen’s career spans more than three decades, during which she has moved freely between commercial campaigns (e.g., for Perrier-Jouët) and autonomous museum projects. In 2023–2024, the Maison Européenne de la Photographie (MEP) in Paris presented a major retrospective of her work, comprising over 200 pieces that bring together photography, collage, and other experimental methods. Such institutional acknowledgment underscores her influence on contemporary color photography and the breaking down of hierarchies between fashion and art.
For collectors, Sassen’s photobooks are notable for their tactile color, rigorous editing, and conceptual density. “Modern Alchemy” stands as an entry point into her practice, because it explicitly pairs her imagery with philosophical writing, giving readers an accessible key to her thinking. Those seeking a larger overview might look toward the MEP retrospective catalogue, which surveys thirty years of evolution. In both cases, the object’s physical design—paper quality, color reproduction, and sequencing—enhances the viewing experience, reflecting Sassen’s consistently deliberate approach to printed media.
