Alan Schaller

Biography

Alan Schaller (born 1988 in London) is a British photographer known for his high‑contrast black‑and‑white street photography. He began photographing in 2015 after working in music and film, and quickly gained recognition, with his images appearing in major UK publications within a year. His rapid rise established him as one of the most visible contemporary street photographers of his generation.

Schaller’s work focuses on the geometry, abstraction, rhythm, and human presence within urban environments. His images are marked by bold shadows, deep blacks, and luminous highlights, often pushing contrast to sculpt dramatic compositions. People in his photographs frequently appear isolated, dwarfed by architecture or enveloped in negative space, reinforcing themes of solitude, anonymity, and modern urban complexity.

He is a co‑founder of Street Photography International (SPi), a collective created to support emerging photographers and elevate the genre worldwide. His work has been exhibited at the Saatchi Gallery, multiple Leica galleries, and institutions across Europe and the US. As a Leica ambassador, he predominantly uses Leica M monochrome cameras with wide‑angle prime lenses, favoring fast shutter speeds and natural light to freeze fleeting moments in the city.

Schaller’s major projects include *Metropolis*, a series and photobook exploring the tension, beauty, and abstraction of urban life across cities such as London, New York, Havana, Kyoto, and Istanbul. In addition to photography, he brings a background in music into his creative process, aiming for a sense of rhythm and narrative in his visual storytelling. Today he continues to live in London, shooting daily and exhibiting internationally.
