Photographer
Nick Turpin
Nick Turpin is a London-based street photographer and filmmaker whose career spans three decades. He began as a newspaper photographer for The Independent in London, later moving into editorial and advertising work for global campaigns, including assignments in New York. Turpin is perhaps best known as the founder of the iN-PUBLiC collective, established in 2000, which became an influential network for candid public photography.
Turpin’s visual language is rooted in the traditions of European street photography: he photographs people in public spaces without staging or direct engagement, seeking fleeting gestures, reflections, and graphic collisions of light and shadow. Unlike some contemporaries who work with telephoto lenses or street-level confrontation, Turpin often uses a compact camera to operate close and unobtrusively, drawing on his newspaper training to stay alert to the rhythm of the city. His approach emphasizes wit, geometry, and a humanistic curiosity about strangers.
Two landmark projects anchor his reputation. The documentary film *in-sight* (2008) explored the practice and philosophy of street photography, featuring conversations with leading practitioners and helping to articulate the genre’s appeal to a wider audience. Equally significant is the book *10 Years of iN-PUBLiC*, which he edited and published, chronicling a decade of work by collective members and serving as a historical record of the group’s contribution to contemporary street photography. Turpin has also been associated with the Miami Street Photography Festival, where he has been listed as a featured artist, and he has served as art director for the STREET photography annual, further cementing his editorial role in the field.
Turpin’s importance lies in his dual role as both a maker and an instigator. By founding iN-PUBLiC, he created one of the first organized platforms for street photographers to share work, publish, and exhibit, at a time before social media provided ready networks. His own photography, meanwhile, has remained committed to the observational, non-confrontational approach that he has taught and lectured on internationally. He has also shared his methods through video channels and workshops, adapting to digital platforms while preserving traditional print values.
For collectors, Turpin’s photobooks represent a genuine entry point into the modern British street photography scene. His self-published and small-press editions, such as the iN-PUBLiC anniversary book, are valued for their documentary completeness and the care given to sequencing and design. They offer a ground-level view of a movement that has grown from niche practice to global phenomenon, and Turpin’s role as its chronicler makes his publications essential reading for anyone interested in candid photography’s recent history.
