Brigitte Carnochan
Brigitte Carnochan is an American fine-art photographer and educator who has worked prolifically since the late 1990s. Born in Germany in 1941, she moved to the United States in 1946 and has since made California her home, residing in Portola Valley. She studied English at San Jose State University, an academic background that informs her literary and contemplative approach to the visual medium. Carnochan has taught photography at the Maine Photographic Workshops, the University of California at Santa Cruz, and Stanford University, where she remains an active educator.
Carnochan’s visual language is characterized by meticulous, often intimate studies of natural forms—most notably flowers—rendered with an elegant, painterly sensitivity. Her work stands apart from conventional botanical photography through its fusion of precise observation with a romantic, almost poetic sensibility, encouraging viewers to slow down and look beneath the surface. She has remarked that people tend to look at photographs too quickly, and much of her work insists on patient scrutiny, revealing the delicate interplay of light, texture, and shadow.
Among her significant bodies of work is the series “Beyond the Last Visible Light,” which explores themes of memory, transience, and the unseen, and the photobook “Poetry in Motion,” celebrated for its imaginative fusion of imagery and narrative. These projects, often produced in close collaboration with publishers, showcase her ability to sequence images musically, creating a rhythmic flow that deepens the viewer’s engagement. Her photographs have been exhibited in galleries and museums nationally and internationally, and are held in museum, corporate, and private collections.
Carnochan’s influence extends beyond her own practice through her decades of teaching and her articulate contributions as an educator. Her works have been featured in publications such as The Sun Magazine and by platforms like PhotoWings, where she has discussed the motivations behind her photographic choices. Her representation by galleries such as Peter Fetterman and Obscura Gallery has solidified her presence in the contemporary fine-art photography market.
For collectors, Carnochan’s photobooks and prints offer a distinct voice within contemporary American photography—one that blends technical mastery with emotional depth. Her book “Poetry in Motion” serves as an excellent entry point, demonstrating her skill in pairing image sequences with lyrical intent. Those acquiring her work should appreciate the care invested in printing and presentation, which elevate her studies of nature into resonant meditations on beauty and impermanence.
