Photographer
Peter Caton
Peter Caton is a British documentary photographer based in the United Kingdom who, since the mid-2000s, has pursued a life of travel and freelance assignments across the globe. After several trips to Asia in early 2006, he committed to working from two rucksacks, carrying his camera into conflict zones and regions affected by humanitarian crises. His work centres on the human cost of social and environmental upheaval, with a strong emphasis on amplifying voices that are often unheard.
Caton’s visual language is rooted in classic reportage and long-form storytelling. Rather than producing single dramatic frames, he works on projects that unfold over years, allowing him to build intimate relationships with communities. His recent focus has been on the climate crisis, documenting how rising waters and changing weather patterns disrupt lives in overlooked regions. Photographs from South Sudan, for example, capture the slow catastrophe of seasonal flooding that submerges villages, farms, and people’s livelihoods.
His most significant body of recent work is the long-term project on the floods in South Sudan, which he photographed over four years. The resulting book, ‘Unyielding Floods’, was launched at The Photographers’ Gallery in London, a clear indication of its serious engagement with contemporary reportage. The project attracted attention from press such as Amateur Photographer and FRAMES Magazine, which discussed both the imagery and the ethics of covering such slow-moving disasters.
Caton has been described as an award-winning documentary photographer, and his career demonstrates how photography can serve humanitarian causes. He has contributed to organisations such as PhotoVoice, an NGO known for using participatory photography for social change. His work aligns with a tradition of British social documentary photography that stretches back to figures like Don McCullin, yet Caton’s global outlook and climate-led subject matter give him a distinct contemporary voice.
For collectors, Caton’s photobooks represent an important record of environmental and social change. ‘Unyielding Floods’ was produced as a substantial monograph, combining the urgency of breaking news with the considered sequencing of an art book. The fact that it was launched at one of London’s leading photography institutions suggests careful editorial and design decisions. Collectors interested in climate documentation and humanitarian photography will find in Caton an approachable entry point that links pressing global issues with timeless visual narrative.
