Photographer
Céline Bodin
Céline Bodin (born 1990 in Louviers, France) is a French photographer based in London. She trained at the Gobelins School in Paris and graduated with a master’s degree in 2013. Working between portraiture and fine-art photography, Bodin has developed a practice concerned with gender, identity, and representation in Western visual culture. Her images examine how bodies are made visible, interpreted, and framed, with particular attention to the conventions through which female beauty is constructed.
Bodin is recognized for her deliberate use of blur, soft focus, and translucent veils. These devices obscure, fragment, and partially dissolve the body, replacing a crisp documentary view with a suggestive, painterly surface. Her photographs ask viewers to reconsider both the appearance of beauty and the presence of the subject before the camera. This strategy places her within a broader generation of photographers revisiting the codes of classical portraiture through a contemporary, often feminist lens, while establishing a distinctive language grounded in atmosphere, restraint, and ambiguity.
Her earliest sustained project, Light of Grace, began in 2013 as an exploration of new ways to express beauty through female portraiture. Developed over several years, the series became a meditation on grace, decay, and the body’s relationship to light. A restricted palette and warm tonalities produce an intimate, almost devotional atmosphere, while the veils, softened contours, and carefully controlled surfaces keep the images suspended between recognition and concealment. Shown in galleries in Europe and the United Kingdom, the series represents Bodin’s continuing interest in photographs that approach the condition of painting rather than reportage.
After moving to London, Bodin exhibited with Purdy Hicks Gallery, which represents her, and appeared in group presentations and on online platforms including The Pasticheur and The Prairie. She describes herself as a photographer and educator on Instagram, indicating an active involvement in teaching and mentoring alongside her studio practice. That educational role is consistent with the reflective character of her work: her photographs do not simply present a subject, but encourage sustained attention to the processes by which images shape perception and identity.
For photobook collectors, Bodin offers a sustained engagement with photographic materiality and the politics of seeing. The coherent sequencing of her projects, her careful editing toward a limited range of tones, and her collaborations with printing and publishing partners—her work is listed by artbook.com and appears in photobook catalogues—make her relevant to collections focused on contemporary French photography and debates around the female gaze. Her relatively early career, supported by gallery representation and international presentation, suggests an artist continuing to develop within a clear and consistent artistic agenda.
