Simon Roberts (born February 5, 1974, in Croydon, Greater London) is an internationally celebrated British contemporary photographic artist, author, and cultural archivist renowned for his expansive, large-format tableaux that explore the socio-political fabric, collective identity, and shared histories of modern societies. Raised in a family with deep political awareness, Roberts discovered his passion for landscape-based storytelling during a childhood family trip to Yosemite National Park. He pursued formal academic training at the University of Sheffield, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (BA Hons) in Human Geography in 1996, followed by an NCTJ Distinction in Photography from Sheffield College in 1997. Rather than approaching topography as a detached backdrop, Roberts treats landscape as a complex, living theater carved by economic migration, municipal shifts, and cultural belonging, synthesizing his rigorous background in geography with a disciplined artistic lens.

Roberts achieved profound international critical and institutional acclaim with his monumental first major photographic survey, conducted during a grueling twelve-month pilgrimage across Russia, culminating in his 2007 breakthrough monograph Motherland. He followed this success with his seminal masterpiece, We English (2009), which documented the English population at leisure in bucolic environments. Shot with an analog 4×5-inch view camera from the elevated roof of a motorhome, the series was voted by Martin Parr as one of the defining photography books of the decade, subverting traditional romanticist painterly paradigms to profile ordinary national character. In 2010, Roberts made art history when he was appointed the official British Election Artist by the House of Commons Works of Art Committee, tasking him with capturing the UK General Election for the Parliamentary Art Collection.
