Pieter Henket

Biography

Pieter Henket (born 1979 in Geldrop, Netherlands) is a Dutch photographer based in New York City whose cinematic, meticulously lit imagery draws inspiration from the 17th‑century Dutch Golden Age of painting. He is internationally known for shooting the cover of Lady Gaga’s debut album “The Fame,” exhibited in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s 2010 American Woman exhibition. Henket’s major documentary project “Congo Tales,” published by Random House/Prestel in 2018, involved photographing Congolese communities enacting their mythologies within the Odzala‑Kokoua rainforest. The series received global coverage from The New York Times, PBS, NPR, BBC, and others. His work has been exhibited at the Met, Museum de Fundatie, and Museum Barberini, and is held in museum collections including the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Henket’s books include “The Way I See It” (2013), “Stars to the Sun” (2014), and “Congo Tales” (2018). He is currently completing “Birds of Mexico City” (2026) and developing “Wings of Light,” a collaborative project with Ukrainian refugee ballet dancers.
