Michael Kenna
Michael Kenna (born 1953 in Widnes, Lancashire, England) is an influential British photographer internationally recognized for his minimalist black-and-white landscapes. Known for his atmospheric images made at dawn, dusk, or during the night, Kenna frequently uses long exposures lasting up to ten hours to record subtle light and details not visible to the naked eye. His work explores the poetic relationship between natural environments and human-made structures, often presented in his signature square format. His images are meticulously crafted in the traditional darkroom using silver-gelatin printing methods.
Kenna studied at St Joseph’s College in Upholland before attending the Banbury School of Art and later specializing in photography at the London College of Printing, from which he graduated in 1976. In 1977 he moved to San Francisco, where he worked as an assistant and printer for photographer Ruth Bernhard. This experience deepened his mastery of darkroom craft and contributed materially to the refined tonal control for which his prints are known.
Throughout his fifty-year career, Kenna has held more than five hundred solo exhibitions and over four hundred group exhibitions around the world. More than ninety monographs and exhibition catalogues have been published on his work. His photographs are included in more than a hundred major permanent collections, such as the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. His subjects range broadly, from the industrial landscape of The Rouge in Michigan to the remote snowscapes of Hokkaido, Japan.
Kenna has received numerous honors, including the Chevalier (2000) and Officer (2022) of the French Order of Arts and Letters, the Imogen Cunningham Award (1981), and other international distinctions. Today he continues to work in Seattle, Washington, producing contemplative landscapes that have become icons of contemporary fine art photography.
