Natale Addamiano

Biography

Natale Addamiano (born 1943 in Bitetto, Bari) is an Italian painter known for his expressive landscapes, luminous night skies, and long engagement with Mediterranean light. He moved to Milan in 1968 to study at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, graduating in painting in 1972. His first solo exhibition took place in 1971 at Galleria Solferino in Milan, featuring the seminal “Diari Notturni” series.

From 1976 to 2007, Addamiano served as Professor of Painting at the Brera Academy, shaping multiple generations of Italian artists. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s he developed a distinctive approach to en plein air practice, driven by a fascination with natural light and the landscape of southern Italy. His cycle of works on the Apulian “Gravine,” created from 1978 onward, solidified his position within contemporary Italian landscape painting.

Across the 1990s and 2000s, Addamiano expanded his thematic range with series on cities and skies, culminating in the celebrated “Starry Skies,” in which the night sky becomes an abstracted field of vibrant chromatic intensity. He has exhibited widely across Italy and internationally, including solo presentations in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and Niigata, facilitated by his long collaboration with gallerist Kayoko Shimada. His work has also been shown at institutions such as Palazzo Ducale in Urbino, Palazzo Sormani in Milan, and the Museo Fondazione Pino Pascali.

Known for his commitment to direct observation and nuanced color, Addamiano continues to explore the relationship between landscape, memory, and light. His oeuvre spans painting, drawing, and printmaking, combining technical refinement with a sustained inquiry into the poetics of place.
