Marco Delogu

Biography

Marco Delogu (born 1960, Rome) is an Italian photographer, publisher and cultural director. He has been a central figure in Italy’s photographic scene, most notably as the founding artistic director of FOTOGRAFIA – International Festival of Rome and of PhC – Capalbio Photography. These two platforms helped bring contemporary photography to wider audiences by creating spaces for exhibitions, discussion and exchange. His institutional work also included serving as director of the Italian Cultural Institute in London, extending his engagement with photography and culture beyond Italy.

Delogu’s personal work concentrates on portraiture, especially portraits of groups bound by shared social, cultural or professional identities. Rather than pursuing the isolated celebrity portrait, he photographs communities: people who share a condition, vocation or form of belonging. The individual appears as a node within a larger collective narrative, and the meaning of a face is shaped by its relation to others. This method distinguishes his practice from more individualised portraitists and gives his images an anthropological dimension, attentive to social texture, affiliation and tension.

Among his notable projects, “Traces of Raffaello” placed him in dialogue with Raphael’s legacy. Through the camera, he responded to Rome’s urban and historical context while considering how an old master’s presence might be approached in the present. In Moscow, he presented two exhibitions that engaged with the history of photography as a medium. These bodies of work are less widely known than his festival activities, yet they show a photographer able to move between documentary impulse and conceptual meditation, between the observed world and the histories that frame it.

Delogu is also the founder of Punctum Press, an independent imprint devoted to photography books. Through the press he has acted as editor and publisher, supporting other photographers’ work as well as his own and reinforcing the connection between photographic authorship and the printed object. His dual role echoes the historic lineage of the photographer-as-editor, from Edward Steichen to contemporary self-publishers. Books, in this context, are not secondary records of photographs but active forms through which images are sequenced, encountered and given a durable public life.

For collectors, Delogu matters because his career embodies an integrated model of photographic practice: he builds institutions, edits books and photographs with a disciplined eye for social texture. His Punctum Press editions, often designed with care and produced in limited runs, form a meeting point between his creative work and editorial vision. He is not as widely collected as some market favourites, but his books and prints carry the weight of a curator’s judgement and an organiser’s persistence. His festival catalogues and group-portrait series offer the most direct entry into the themes, methods and networks that define his work.
