Photographer
Lars Kwakkenbos
Lars Kwakkenbos is a Belgian artist, researcher and critic born in 1975. He is based in Brussels and Ghent, and teaches at the School of Arts (KASK) of HOGENT and Howest, where he also works as a lector and researcher. His academic training spans history and art history, studied at KU Leuven, the Université François Rabelais in Tours, and the Freie and Humboldt universities in Berlin. From 2002 to 2007 he worked as an assistant and later as a lecturer or researcher, according to available records. These roles establish him within the institutional and intellectual networks of Belgian contemporary art.
Kwakkenbos’s practice is not defined by a single visual medium. Rather, it is marked by sustained critical engagement with art, architecture and the social function of images. His writings have appeared in leading Flemish publications including De Standaard, A+ and A10, where he discusses contemporary art and architectural projects. Through this editorial activity, he occupies a position between academia, cultural journalism and artistic research. His contribution is therefore less a continuous photographic production than an active role in framing how visual culture is interpreted, valued and circulated.
His teaching and research at KASK extend this contextual approach into the education of artists and designers. He participates in research and pedagogical environments that connect artistic practice with public discourse, attending to the political, urban and institutional conditions that shape images. His lectures and writing tend to treat photography and related practices conceptually, asking how institutions, spaces and systems of representation influence what can be seen. This interdisciplinary position gives him a distinctive vantage point on the recent history of Belgian art, even though he is not primarily known as a photographer.
Available public sources do not document major photobooks, solo exhibitions or a clearly delineated independent oeuvre of images by Kwakkenbos. His documented output is instead concentrated in criticism, academic work, columns, lectures and teaching. For photobook collectors, this absence is itself relevant: Kwakkenbos represents part of the critical infrastructure through which certain forms of architectural, conceptual and contemporary photography become legible in Belgium. His importance lies less in an established body of collectible books than in the editorial perspective that helps shape attention around such practices.
Those interested in the people who determine what becomes visible in Belgian photography will find Kwakkenbos an important figure. His base at KASK places him within Ghent’s artistic and educational scene, while collaborations with institutions such as Q-O2, a workspace for sound and art, point to a continuing interest in interdisciplinary practice. General readers may not associate his name directly with photographic images, but his intellectual work has influenced the discussion and teaching of visual culture. Further archival research may clarify a more direct role as a maker; on current evidence, his significance rests on writing, education and curatorial reasoning.
