Photographer
Hans Theys
Hans Theys (born 1963) is a Belgian writer, art historian, and exhibition maker based in Belgium. He holds a Master of Philosophy from the Free University of Brussels (1987) and has long been a prominent figure in the Flemish art scene. Although not primarily a photographer, his extensive critical and editorial work has placed him at the intersection of contemporary art and photography, where he has shaped discourses around emerging artists and photographers through essays, interviews, and book design.
His practice is grounded in a deeply discursive approach: rather than producing images himself, Theys engages with photography through close reading, intellectual dialogue, and the crafting of textual spaces that illuminate the conceptual foundations of a photographer’s work. His writing combines philosophical inquiry with an intimate knowledge of artistic process, often involving long-term conversations with artists in their studios. This method distinguishes him from typical art critics, as he prefers immersive, book-length collaborations that transcend the conventional review format.
Among his most notable contributions are the many essays and interviews he has authored for photographers such as Max Pinckers, whose self-published book projects Theys has supported with texts that tease out the conceptual layers behind the images. His partnership with Pinckers, seen in texts like ‘Montagne de Miel’ (2011), demonstrates his ability to contextualize complex, performative documentary practices. He has also written extensively for visual artists, poets, and institutions, always aiming to bridge the gap between making and meaning.
As a professor at the School of Arts Gent (KASK), Theys has influenced a generation of students, encouraging them to consider the intellectual and narrative dimensions of their visual work. His role as a critic and curator has placed him in exhibitions and publications across Europe, where he has advocated for a more thoughtful integration of text and image. While he does not produce photobooks himself, his editorial design and writing have enhanced the reception of major contemporary publications, underscoring the importance of a well-crafted verbal companion to visual series.
For photobook collectors, Theys matters less as a maker and more as an interpreter and co-creator of context. His long-form essays often accompany seminal photography projects, and his attention to the physical form of books—having designed and written for dozens of artist publications—offers a rare synthesis of critical depth and material craft. Collectors seeking to understand the conceptual underpinnings of contemporary Belgian photography would do well to follow his writings and the projects he supports, as they provide an invaluable entry point into the intellectual currents shaping the medium today.
