Jim Naughten

Biography

Jim Naughten (born 1969) is a distinguished British photographic artist renowned for exploring the intersections of history, natural sciences, and human perception through highly stylized, manipulated imagery. Originally trained as a painter, he treats his digital photography like canvas works, combining meticulous composition with cutting-edge post-production. Naughten first achieved critical acclaim for historical and anthropological series like “Re-enactors” (2009) and “Hereros” (2013). He later shifted his focus to natural history, pioneering three-dimensional stereoscopic fine-art photography in “Animal Kingdom” (2016) and “Objects in Stereo” (2022). His critically acclaimed contemporary series “Eremozoic” (2021) and “Biophilia” (2025) challenge our fictionalized, romanticized relationship with the environment. By altering museum diorama contexts and introducing hyper-saturated, surreal color palettes, Naughten underscores the ecological anxieties of the modern era and the accelerating reality of mass extinction. His works are collected globally and held in major permanent public institutions, including the Imperial War Museum in London and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
