Biography

John Haynes (born 1937) is a British photographer best known for his seminal contribution to theatre photography. After teaching himself photography in 1962, inspired by Henri Cartier-Bresson and Andreas Feininger, he spent two years working for The Sunday Times before specialising in theatre reportage. Haynes became the in-house photographer for the Royal Court Theatre and the Hampstead Theatre, and produced more than 200 productions’ images for the National Theatre in London. His work has been exhibited internationally in London, New York, Moscow, and at the National Portrait Gallery. Haynes is particularly acclaimed for his photographs of Samuel Beckett, which document both original productions and Beckett’s directorial vision.
