Biography
Philippe Halsman (1906–1979) was a Latvian-born American photographer best known for his iconic portrait photography and his long collaboration with artist Salvador Dalí. After emigrating to the United States during World War II, Halsman became one of the most prominent portrait photographers of the 20th century, producing over 100 covers for Life magazine.
Halsman’s portraits are characterized by psychological intensity, technical precision, and a distinctive ability to reveal personality through expression and gesture. His famous “jumpology” series—where subjects were photographed mid-jump—sought to strip away social masks and capture authentic moments of individuality.
His publications, including Dali’s Mustache and Halsman at Work, remain highly regarded for their inventive approach to portraiture and collaboration. For collectors, Halsman’s work represents a cornerstone of photographic portraiture, bridging editorial photography, surrealist experimentation, and the evolution of the photobook as a creative medium.
