Biography

Sam Haskins (1926–2009) was a South African-born British photographer celebrated for his pioneering contributions to in-camera image montage and 1960s figure photography. His influential photobooks — Five Girls (1962), Cowboy Kate & Other Stories (1964), November Girl (1967), and African Image (1967) — shaped the aesthetics of fashion, surrealism, and graphic photographic design. Cowboy Kate & Other Stories won the Prix Nadar in 1964 and became a landmark in the history of the photographic book. Haskins began his career in Johannesburg before moving to London in 1968, later settling in Australia. His work extended from fine art to advertising, including a long collaboration with Pentax, for whom he photographed and art‑directed numerous calendars. Renowned for his craftsmanship, analog montage, and bold visual storytelling, Haskins remains a key figure in twentieth‑century visual culture.
