Tyler Mitchell

Biography

Tyler Mitchell (b. 1995, United States) is a contemporary photographer and filmmaker whose work reimagines Black identity through a lens of joy, leisure, and everyday beauty. He gained international recognition in 2018 as the first Black photographer to shoot a cover for Vogue, featuring Beyoncé, marking a pivotal moment in fashion and visual culture.

Mitchell’s practice spans editorial, fine art, and moving image, often depicting young Black subjects in serene, sunlit environments that challenge historical narratives of representation. His imagery is characterized by softness, intimacy, and a cinematic sensibility, positioning his work at the intersection of fashion, art, and social commentary.

His photobooks and exhibitions, including I Can Make You Feel Good, have been widely collected and exhibited in major institutions such as the International Center of Photography and Foam Amsterdam. For collectors, Mitchell represents a new generation of image-makers whose work is both culturally significant and visually distinctive, with strong crossover appeal between contemporary art and photobook culture.
