Biography
Boris Mikhailov (1938–2024, Ukraine) was a pioneering photographer whose work critically examined life in the Soviet Union and post-Soviet society. He is widely regarded as one of the most important figures in Eastern European photography, known for his raw, provocative, and deeply humanistic approach.
Mikhailov’s practice spans a wide range of styles, from conceptual series to diaristic snapshots and staged documentary. His work often addresses themes of poverty, marginalization, identity, and the collapse of political systems, most notably in his influential series Case History, which documents the lives of homeless individuals in Kharkiv.
His photobooks and exhibitions have had a profound impact on contemporary photography, challenging conventional aesthetics and ethical boundaries. For collectors, Mikhailov’s work is significant for its historical importance, uncompromising vision, and its central role in shaping post-Soviet photographic discourse.
