Dotan Saguy

Biography

Dotan Saguy is a documentary and street photographer based in Los Angeles, born in Israel and having lived in Paris before settling in Southern California. After a successful career as a high-tech entrepreneur, in 2015 he redirected his focus to photography, a passion he had carried since youth. His work is rooted in unposed, unstaged observation—he describes his images as “100% free-range organic,” emphasizing a candid approach that avoids manufactured moments.

Saguy’s visual language is characterized by a warm, color-driven sensibility and an intimate engagement with the beach subculture of Venice Beach, a community known for its boardwalk performers, bodybuilders, skateboarders, and street life. Unlike many photographers who approach urban environments from a distance, Saguy embeds himself for years, building trust with his subjects. This allows his pictures to reveal the texture of a neighborhood in flux—gentrification, homelessness, and the erosion of its bohemian identity are recurring tensions.

His key projects include Venice Beach: The Last Days of a Bohemian Paradise (published in 2020), which documents the changing character of the Venice boardwalk amid rising development and social pressures. Another major body of work, Nowhere to Go But Everywhere (featured on Lenscratch in 2020), expands his vision to broader wanderings, capturing travelers, migrants, and urban wanderers in public spaces. He has also produced Venice Beach: The Color of Enduring Wonder, and has published monographs with the German independent press Kehrer Verlag, which has lent his work a durable physical form.

Although his career is relatively short, Saguy has become a recognized figure in contemporary street photography, serving as a street photography workshop instructor for the Leica Akademie and participating in podcasts and features in outlets such as Dodho magazine and About Photography. His teaching and public projects position him as a bridge between the high-art documentary tradition and the accessible community of practice that has grown around street photography in the digital age.

For collectors, Saguy’s photobooks stand out for their thoughtful sequencing and collaborative editing relationships with European publishers. The Kehrer editions, in particular, offer well-printed reproductions that respect the saturated color and detail of his originals. Novices might begin with Venice Beach: The Last Days of a Bohemian Paradise, which condenses his central theme—the human cost of urban transformation—into a cohesive visual narrative. While his profile has grown quickly, his body of work is still developing, making early editions a meaningful record of a photographer examining social change at the street level.
