Key projects

Project · 1993–1999
The Chain
Made from 1993 to 1999 at Taiwan’s Long Fa Tang Temple psychiatric hospital, The Chain comprises life-sized portraits of patients who were chained together in pairs. Chang’s repeated, near-neutral framing makes institutional control visible while preserving the highly varied expressions of the people pictured. This project merits selection because its documented presentation at the Taiwan Pavilion of the Venice Biennale in 2001 and the Bienal de São Paulo in 2002 established it as a major public statement within Chang’s sustained investigation of alienation, attachment, and social constraint.

Project · 1992–2011
China Town
China Town follows Chinese immigrant families divided between New York City’s Chinatown and Fujian. Beginning in 1992, Chang documented 18 families through still photography and film, focusing on men working without documentation, in long shifts and crowded shared housing, while sending money home. The project’s photographic idea is built into its contrast of black-and-white images of the men and color images of family members in Fujian. It merits selection for turning long-term documentary access into a sustained account of migration, separation, labor, and intergenerational change.

The Chain No. 4
The Chain No. 4 is one of the individually titled photographs reproduced in an Artsy feature on Chang’s series. Its importance is inseparable from the project’s serial structure: the patients were photographed in paired chains against closely comparable settings, a method the feature describes as exposing the dehumanizing logic of the institution while allowing individual expressions to register. This photograph merits selection as a named example from the body of work that brought those portraits into a prominent 2016 Chi-Wen Gallery presentation at Frieze New York.

1998 · New York City, United States
New York, USA, 1998
This 1998 photograph shows a newly arrived immigrant eating noodles on a fire escape in New York City. Magnum identifies it as part of Chang’s Chinatown project, begun in 1992 about immigrants living in the city without legal protection. It merits selection because its specific setting links an ordinary meal to the precarious housing and labor conditions central to the larger project. Magnum further notes that Chang received the W. Eugene Smith Award the following year and that the work drew attention to Chinatown labor rights.
