Photographer
Txema Salvans
Txema Salvans is a Spanish photographer, born in 1971 and based in Barcelona, whose practice is closely associated with documentary observations of Spain and its people. His work concentrates on settings that are easily overlooked: the semi-industrial, sun-baked margins of Mediterranean Spain, roadsides, industrial zones, and other functional but neglected environments. Rather than repeating familiar tourist or metropolitan images, he uses these places to examine labour, leisure, social isolation, everyday endurance, and the relationship between people and the built landscape. His sustained attention to a coherent territory gives his photographs the character of a long-term social and geographical inquiry.
A defining element of Salvans’s method is his use of a large-format technical camera mounted on a tripod. The equipment is deliberately conspicuous, introducing a formal, measured quality into photographs made in situations that may initially appear casual, peripheral, or unremarkable. He has also used a high-visibility jacket to approach subjects, a practical strategy that complicates the expectation that documentary photography must depend on invisibility. This visible, controlled method does not seek to manufacture drama. Instead, it allows him to attend closely to people inhabiting spaces shaped by infrastructure, work, recreation, and neglect.
Salvans’s pictures are notable for the tension between their technical precision and the socially awkward or quiet encounters they describe. Their large-format clarity and carefully balanced compositions encourage viewers to look slowly at figures, open ground, roads, industrial structures, and improvised uses of space. People may appear isolated, paused, or absorbed in an activity whose significance is not immediately legible. The photographs therefore move beyond simple description: they make peripheral environments feel like places where broader cultural conditions become visible, including the friction between modern development, informal activity, and ordinary forms of survival.
This documentary practice contributes to a contemporary photographic account of Spain that resists picturesque simplification. Salvans does not treat the country’s edges as empty backdrops or as picturesque alternatives to the city. Roadsides, semi-industrial districts, and neglected facilities become settings in which social relationships and personal circumstances are registered indirectly, through distance, posture, placement, and the surrounding architecture. His observational restraint distinguishes the work from event-driven documentary approaches, while its sustained attention to marginal spaces gives those spaces a historical and social presence within the photographic record.
For photobook readers and collectors, Salvans is worth approaching for the consistency of his territory and for the productive tension between a conspicuous working method, exacting composition, and understated human situations. A useful way to read a Salvans book is to follow how individual figures, empty spaces, and constructed surroundings accumulate across a sequence. What may begin as an anecdotal encounter gradually becomes a broader portrait of Spanish life at its margins, in which everyday environments reveal forms of labour, leisure, isolation, and endurance that more conventional images of the country often leave unseen.

The Waiting Game
The Waiting Game is a series of photographs documenting sex workers waiting along roadside locations across Spain. Salvans shot them from a hidden camera, often from long distance, without their knowledge. The images capture moments of stillness, fatigue, or expectation, set against industrial or tourist signage that creates ironic contrasts. The project is significant for its empathetic yet unvarnished view of a marginalized group; it reframed documentary practice by foregrounding the environment as much as the subject. It received critical attention and became a key contemporary Spanish photobook of the decade.

Nice to Meet You
In Nice to Meet You, Txema Salvans observes tourists in Barcelona and its surroundings, portraying them from behind or at a distance with a telephoto lens. The uninformed subjects collapse in cramped leisure spaces, often in awkward poses or conflicting with modernist architecture. The series reflects on the ubiquity and absurdity of mass tourism, its impact on urban life, and photography's ability to capture what is overlooked. Published in 2015, it solidified his reputation as an acute social observer, balancing humor, criticism, and compassion.
