The Sioux Project: Tatanka Oyate is a definitive monograph led by Hunkpapa Lakota artist Dana Claxton. Co-published by the MacKenzie Art Gallery and Information Office, the book is the culmination of years of community-based research into the “aesthetic of the Sioux.” It challenges colonial art historical narratives by centering Indigenous knowledge and the continuous evolution of Sioux visual language. Through stunning photography of contemporary beadwork, performance art, and traditional crafts, alongside scholarly essays and Elder interviews, the volume examines how the Tatanka Oyate (Buffalo People) maintain cultural sovereignty across the Northern Plains. It is an essential document of Indigenous resistance, beauty, and the profound connection between land, spirit, and art.
