EMPTIES is a refined artist’s book by New York-based multimedia artist Moyra Davey, published to accompany her 2013 exhibition “Ornament and Reproach.” The volume presents 56 black-and-white reproductions from her “Bottle” series, a project born from the accidental discovery of an empty liquor bottle on a contact sheet that evolved into a multi-year study. Davey’s work is celebrated for finding poetic depth in the “detritus of daily life,” and these images of empty vessels serve as psychological markers of consumption, habit, and “wilful distraction.” Curated by John Goodwin, the book reflects Davey’s signature investigation into how mundane objects carry the invisible traces of human existence and personal history.
