In 1989, at age 19, she became a Hangyoku (apprentice geisha) and began capturing her surroundings with her father’s old camera. Her fresh, vivid style became a forerunner of the “girly photography” movement that swept Japan in the 1990s. The book traces her evolution through various roles—from modeling for Jean Paul Gaultier and appearing on the cover of The Face, to her collaborative musical projects and her relocation to Berlin in 1999 to work with director Christoph Schlingensief.
