By Land and Sea (Prospect and Refuge) is a seminal photography monograph by Vancouver artist Marian Penner Bancroft. Functioning as both an exhibition catalogue and an artist’s project, the book addresses the profound relationship between landscape, identity, and history. Retracing the migration paths of her ancestors from the Highlands of Scotland and the Mennonite communities of Southern Ukraine (formerly South Russia) to the Canadian prairies and British Columbia, Bancroft uses photography to interrogate the “settler narrative.” The publication features a poem by Fred Wah and an essay by Karen Henry, examining how landscapes carry the visual traces of human activity, colonial history, and personal memory.
