Description

Nymph Daughters is a departure for Todd Hido, returning to the narrative sequencing experiments he first explored in graduate school under Larry Sultan. Published by the boutique Japanese house Super Labo, the book is meticulously designed to resemble a “pulp” tale or a well-worn sketchbook. The visual journey is anchored by two found images: a 1950s studio portrait of a mother at the front, and an archival newspaper photograph of a car crash at the back. Hido weaves his own archive of haunting landscapes, vacant houses, and intimate portraits between these two bookends, creating a fictionalized “pulp” narrative that suggests hidden pasts and psychological undercurrents.

Hido notes that the project reflects a human attraction to re-engaging with the things that troubled us most. By mixing archival “found” footage with his own cinematic style, he blurs the line between personal memory and collective history. This volume is highly prized by collectors for its low print run and its unique placement within Hido’s bibliography as a bridge between his early experiments and his later complex monographs.
