Description
Excerpts from Silver Meadows is widely considered Todd Hido’s most ambitious and personal work to date. Named after a street in his hometown of Kent, Ohio, the monograph serves as a creative wellspring where Hido re-examines the innocence and darkness of a Midwestern suburban upbringing. The book is an intricate tapestry of over 100 images, including high-contrast landscapes captured through rain-slicked windshields and intimate, often troubled portraits of anonymous women. It features four massive “super-size” gatefolds designed to force the viewer to slow down and “peel back the layers” of the narrative. Unlike his earlier works that focused on the exterior of homes, this volume dives deep into the psychological interiors of memory, blending found vintage photos with his own contemporary shots to create a blurred line between autobiography and fiction.
The production quality reflects the gravity of the subject matter, using fine matte Japanese art paper that enhances the velvety shadows and muted palettes characteristic of Hido’s aesthetic. The sequencing, curated alongside designer Bob Aufuldish, evokes the fragmented nature of recollection—nostalgic yet fraught with a sense of impending unease. This first edition remains a cornerstone of contemporary photobook history.
