Description

Intimate Distance is the first comprehensive chronological survey of Todd Hido’s highly influential career. Published by Éditions Textuel (and concurrently by Aperture in English), this massive volume brings together over two decades of work, organized into distinct thematic and chronological chapters. It traces Hido’s evolution from his early obsession with the glowing windows of suburban homes at night to his later, more complex psychological studies involving anonymous models and desolate, rain-streaked landscapes. The book features approximately 250 photographs, many of which have become icons of contemporary American photography. Through its sequencing, the monograph reveals the recurring motifs that define Hido’s “noir” aesthetic: the tension between domesticity and desire, the fog of memory, and the cinematic quality of the everyday.

The book includes a masterful introduction by David Campany, who situates Hido within the history of the medium, and an insightful essay by Katya Tylevich. Together, they explore how Hido uses the camera not just to document the world, but to reconstruct a fictionalized version of his own past. This retrospective is an essential reference for understanding the depth and consistency of Hido’s visual language.
