Description

The End Sends Advance Warning is the cinematic culmination of Todd Hido’s recent years of global travel and introspective study. Conceived as a thematic sequel to “Bright Black World,” this monograph expands his visual vocabulary beyond the “endless winter” of the Nordic landscape to include the lush but storm-shattered coasts of the Hawaiian Islands and the rugged terrains of the American West. The title suggests a world in a state of “precarity”—where the natural environment and the human psyche are both issuing silent alarms about the future. Hido’s signature moody, high-contrast style is applied to images of turbulent seas, desolate roads, and enigmatic portraits that seem to exist in a state of suspended animation. With 45 large-format color plates, the book uses multiple gatefolds and a massive fold-out poster to immerse the viewer in a narrative that feels both apocalyptic and deeply intimate, documenting what Hido calls “The Great Acceleration” of our collective uncertainty.
