Snack Sakura is a contemporary photography monograph by Greg Girard that captures the intimate world of Japan’s “snack bars.” Spanning 2018 to 2025, Girard crisscrossed Japan from Okinawa to Hokkaido to photograph establishments that all shared the country’s most popular snack bar name: “Sakura.” These small, often windowless bars are led by a “mama” and serve as social hubs for regulars, offering karaoke and conversation over basic drinks. The book explores these anachronistic spaces—often tethered to Shōwa-era aesthetics—revealing the human element and sense of community within Japan’s understated nightlife. Featuring over 220 photographs and a conversation with Kyoichi Tsuzuki, the volume is a tribute to a disappearing cultural landscape hiding in plain sight.
