Robert Frank’s “The Americans” is arguably the most influential photobook of the post-war period. This 2008 Steidl edition celebrates its 50th anniversary with new tritone scans supervised by Frank. Across 83 photographs, Frank stripped away the glossy veneer of the American Dream to reveal a nation wrestling with racism, consumerism, and isolation. His intuitive, off-kilter style broke every technical rule of the 1950s, creating a cinematic “sad poem” of a country in transition. This version features the original introduction by Jack Kerouac and revised cropping chosen by the artist.
