Raghubir Singh was a pioneer of color street photography who recorded India’s dense milieu in complex, frieze-like compositions pulsating with opulent color. This volume, the first in-depth study of his work, explores how Singh forged a distinctively Indian style of modernist photography—one that stands, as he put it, “on the Ganges side of modernism.” It features iconic depictions of Indian life, from religious festivals to daily scenes along the river, analyzed through the lens of both Western and South Asian artistic traditions.
