Sent a Letter is a unique “portable museum” consisting of seven small accordion-fold books housed in a handmade cloth box. For years, Dayanita Singh made small photo journals of her travels in India, creating two handmade copies of each: one for the friend she traveled with and one for her own “kitchen museum.” Steidl published seven of these journals, including one featuring photographs of a young Dayanita taken by her mother, Nony Singh. The volumes unfold into miniature private exhibitions, exploring cities like Varanasi and Calcutta through intimate, coded images that bypass traditional narrative text.
