Book Building is Dayanita Singh’s manifesto for the photobook, documenting her 20-year collaborative journey with Gerhard Steidl. It explores the transformation of the book from a traditional catalogue into a “book-object” that functions as a mobile exhibition space. The book traces her process from her first work, Zakir Hussain (1986), to the Zakir Hussain Maquette (2019), and includes detailed DIY instructions for readers to curate their own exhibitions using her books. It features images and short texts that redefine the boundaries between publishing and art.
