The Zakir Hussain Maquette is a facsimile of the handmade book object Dayanita Singh created in 1986 as her first project as a graphic design student. It documents six winters spent traveling with the legendary Indian classical tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain. This edition reproduces Singh’s original cut-and-paste working method, including her handwritten notes, layout sketches, and “imperfections” that reveal the seeds of her later “book-object” philosophy. It includes an accompanying reader with an essay by curator Shanay Jhaveri, exploring Singh’s intuitive assembly of image and text.
