Ukraine: Love+War

Ukraine: Love+War

Soft Ota-Bind paperback Ukrainian, English 290 pages

Description

Ukraine: Love+War records ordinary lives under threat, bringing the experiences of children and families into a collective account of war. Published by FotoEvidence in 2024, the book grew out of a call to photojournalists that drew roughly seven thousand images from more than two hundred applicants across thirty-two countries. From that field came a collaborative volume of photographs and witness accounts by more than ninety Ukrainian and international photojournalists, assembled to document the toll of Russia’s aggression on children and families over a decade that began with the conflict in 2014 and escalated with the full-scale invasion in 2022.

The editorial judgment here is notable. Sarah Leen served as photo editor, with Irynka Hromotska as assistant photo editor; Svetlana Bachevanova directed the project conceptually and artistically; Fernanda Fajardo designed it; Myroslav Laiuk wrote the introduction, and David Stuart edited the English text. The book refuses the single-author monograph in favor of a chorus: bringing daily life together with its disruption, displacement, destruction, and death makes loss legible against the routines it erases. Witness accounts accompany the images, allowing testimony to sit beside the photograph rather than be overwritten by it.

This is the second such collaborative project from FotoEvidence, following Ukraine: A War Crime. Where that earlier volume centered on evidence of violence and war crimes, Love+War directs attention to the domestic world under siege. The distinction is an editorial argument, not a softening: the book asks what remains of family life when it is documented under fire, and it treats love as a subject of reportage rather than a sentiment appended to catastrophe.

The bilingual English and Ukrainian edition runs 290 pages in a soft Ota-Bind format at 20 x 32 cm, with color and black-and-white images. Its value for a collection lies in this scale of participation and the historical record it assembles. A book made by so many hands, edited toward a single proposition, will be consulted as a document of how photographers from many countries saw one war and the lives it entered.
