Blazing Light

Blazing Light

Hardcover English 264 pages 23.5 × 28.58

Description

Mimi Plumb began photographing as a teenager in Walnut Creek, a San Francisco suburb during a period of rapid land development and global instability. That early vantage point shaped a realism of unusual temperature. Blazing Light gathers three major bodies of work—The White Sky, Landfall and The Golden City, and The Reservoir—which together consider the anxieties of American life in the late Cold War and its aftermath.

The publisher frames Plumb’s recurring concerns as the human-altered landscape of California and the western United States, alongside the pressures of climate change, unbridled capitalism, and military conflict. Her photographs foreground the presence of people, lending the work pathos and occasional notes of humorous absurdity. Even as she works within realism, the images remain ambient and enigmatic, inviting conjecture more than supplying documentary information.

What distinguishes this volume is its assembly of three bodies of work in a single sequence. The White Sky, Landfall and The Golden City, and The Reservoir were made across different periods, and placing them together makes visible how a sensibility persists and shifts. Texts come from Gregory Harris, Karen Irvine, Lauren Richman, and Amanda Maddox and Jordan Bass, whose perspectives are curatorial and scholarly. The book is co-published by Radius Books and the High Museum of Art, and appears alongside Plumb’s first solo museum exhibition.

For a collector, the book’s interest is concrete and structural: a 264-page hardcover trade edition with 131 images, issued in English at 9.25 by 11.25 inches. It is co-published with the High Museum of Art and accompanies an exhibition that traveled to the Johnson Museum at Cornell, the Norton Museum of Art, and the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago. The volume thus places three decades of Plumb’s photographic thinking in one place, with multiple curatorial voices, in a form that will endure.
