One Picture Book Two #23: Love You

One Picture Book Two #23: Love You

Hardcover 16 pages

Description

Deanna Templeton’s Love You belongs to One Picture Book Two, Nazraeli Press’s ongoing series of small hardcover volumes in which a photographer builds an argument through a deliberately short sequence. Here the subject is the heart: drawn, scratched, sprayed, or otherwise improvised in public places around the world, wherever someone has wanted to leave a sign of affection behind. The book gathers photographs of that recurring motif, treating the shape as a form of shorthand — a message compressed into a few strokes that can travel across language and place.

The project is consistent with Templeton’s longer practice. Her documentary and serial work has examined youth culture and feminine identity since the 1990s, often setting her own adolescence against the experiences of young women today. Love You narrows that attention to a single public gesture, and the narrowing is the point. A padlock fixed to a bridge, a proposal written into sand: the publisher’s framing connects such acts to a lineage of public declarations, while the pictures themselves stay close to the ordinary surfaces where they appear. The cumulative effect is less sentimental than attentive, an accumulation of small marks that strangers have chosen to make visible.

At sixteen pages, with eighteen four-color plates and an original signed photograph included, the volume is designed as an object to be handled rather than a survey. The brevity suits the material: each image can be read as one entry in an open-ended index of the same idea. The series format, the scale of the book, and the presence of the signed print give collectors a compact record of a photographer working at a specific register — serial, observational, and alert to how feeling is inscribed in shared space.
