Our Ocean's Edge

Our Ocean's Edge

Hardcover English 96 pages

Description

In 2015, Nazraeli Press published Our Ocean’s Edge, a clothbound monograph of 55 duotone plates by the photographer Jasmine Swope. The book documents California’s Marine Protected Areas, a statewide network of ocean parks created along roughly 1,100 miles of coastline, and it grew out of Swope’s travels up and down that coast soon after the system was established. The subject is not simply shoreline scenery but a civic and ecological experiment: places set aside, like national parks on land, for the protection of wildlife and habitat. Dwight Holing contributes original narrative writing, and Wallace J. Nichols opens the volume with a foreword.

Swope’s pictures do not behave like conventional nature photography. Working with long exposures, she lets contours soften and atmospherics gather, so that waves and birds blur into near-abstractions. The publisher has compared the results to large-scale graphite drawings; the Los Angeles Times critic Christopher Knight described rocky outcrops rising through fog as landscapes that might belong to another planet, strange precisely because they are close to home. That estrangement is the point. Rather than illustrate a habitat directly, the photographs suggest how much of it remains out of sight.

As an object, the book is deliberately scaled to the work: hardcover, 12 by 12 inches, 96 pages, with the plates printed in duotone. The square format and restrained palette give the sequence room to breathe, and the pairing of photographs with Holing’s narratives keeps the project anchored in the specific places and arguments that produced it. The ocean parks were a recent institutional fact when Swope began; the book records both the terrain and the moment of its protection.

For collectors, the interest lies in that combination of subject and treatment. This is a sustained documentary project by a photographer whose large-format work is built on long exposure and tonal subtlety, issued by a publisher known for attentive printing. The book holds a defined place in the visual record of California’s coast and of marine conservation, and it repays slow looking rather than quick browsing.
