Winter

Hardcover English 80 pages 25.4 × 33.02

Description

Winter brings together Jeffrey Conley’s black-and-white photographs of a season that changes both the appearance of the landscape and the way it can be seen. Snow covers familiar surfaces, branches become lines against pale ground, and dark water or stone interrupts expanses of white. These are photographs of particular places, but their interest also lies in the relations between light, texture and empty space. The sequence invites a slower look at variations that a quick glance might miss.

Conley’s approach gives quiet subjects considerable visual weight. A tree, a slope or a small interruption in a snowy field can become the centre of a photograph without turning into a spectacle. The balance between sharply described forms and areas with little visible detail makes the eye move between recognition and abstraction. Across the book, winter is less a single kind of scenery than a changing set of conditions through which the photographer observes the world.

First published in 2011 with 42 photographs, Winter appears here in its expanded 2024 edition, adding 18 images to the earlier selection. Nazraeli Press presents the 80-page volume in a 10-by-13-inch format, with linen binding and reproductions on Korean art paper, in an edition of 1,500 copies. Peter Fetterman’s introduction includes an updated passage dated 2024. The larger sequence offers an opportunity to consider the relationship between an established body of photographs and its later expansion.

For a reader building a collection of landscape photography, the book’s interest lies in that sustained encounter with a restrained visual language. Its generous pages allow small marks and broad tonal areas to share attention. Turning the pages becomes a way of comparing how similar elements take on different roles from one image to the next. This edition can be approached as a complete sequence in its own right, while its expanded contents also distinguish it from the original volume.
