Duo

Hardcover English 64 pages 25.4 × 38.1

Description

Herb Ritts’s Duo brings together photographs of Bob Paris and Rod Jackson, presenting the two men as both individual figures and a couple. Published by Twin Palms in 1991, the book concentrates on the relationship between the subjects and on the formal possibilities of photographing them together. Ritts uses a restrained visual setting to make posture, balance and the spaces between bodies central to the pictures.

The publisher’s gallery moves between full figures, paired poses and closer views. In some images, limbs create intersecting lines; in others, faces or a single figure carry the composition. The shifts in scale allow the reader to compare an overall pose with smaller gestures. Monochrome tones give these changes a consistent visual language, while the subjects’ physical proximity makes the photographs readable as portraits of a relationship as well as studies of form.

This hardcover edition contains 64 pages and 32 duotone plates in a tall, ten-by-fifteen-inch format. Its brown front cover places the title, photographer and subjects in gold lettering. The large page offers room for the figures and their surrounding negative space. The book was produced to benefit amfAR, linking its publication to AIDS research; that purpose is part of the project’s context without determining a single interpretation of each image.

Duo invites sustained attention to how two people occupy a photographic frame. Its limited cast encourages comparisons across the sequence: a change of distance or direction can alter the relationship the viewer perceives. The book’s interest lies in that exchange between controlled composition and personal connection, carried through an extended body of photographs rather than confined to one representative portrait.
