Fictions

Hardcover English 188 pages 27.94 × 35.56

Description

Fictions brings together photographs and drawings by Anthony Goicolea, extending his interest in invented worlds and the behavior of groups. In this third book, he moves away from using himself as his own photographic model. Instead, young male figures inhabit scenarios shaped by ritual, costume, and collective activity. Their settings suggest places where ordinary social rules have been suspended and new ones are being improvised.

The works connect recognizable environments with improbable events. Forests, makeshift structures, and spaces associated with recreation become stages for encounters whose purpose remains uncertain. The publisher’s illustrated selection includes structures among trees, figures gathered in a pale woodland, a burst of fireworks, and a monochrome car scene. These changes of subject and atmosphere encourage the reader to look for relationships while resisting a single explanation of the fictional world.

Twin Palms published Fictions as a clothbound hardcover with a dust jacket. The volume contains 188 pages and 100 four-color plates in an approximately fourteen-by-eleven-inch format. Photographs and drawings both belong to Goicolea’s practice, giving the book more than one means of constructing its imagined situations. The distinction between a scene that seems photographically witnessed and one visibly made by drawing becomes part of the project’s interest.

The title offers a useful approach to reading: each work can be treated as a proposition rather than evidence of an actual event. Gestures and group arrangements invite questions about belonging, imitation, and the pressure to take part. Goicolea provides visual clues without requiring a complete narrative. Moving through the book, the reader encounters a set of related possibilities whose unease comes from their proximity to recognizable human behavior.
