Room to Play

Hardcover English 96 pages 30.48 × 33.02

Description

Room to Play presents Simen Johan’s digitally constructed photographs of childhood and adolescence. Familiar places and ordinary objects become settings for uneasy, invented encounters. The pictures have the convincing finish of photographs, yet their events resist a straightforward documentary reading. A child with a cat, a tricycle after dark, and figures surrounded by foliage suggest stories without explaining how those stories began or where they might lead.

Johan combines parts of faces and bodies from different people to create his figures. Age, gender, and identity become materials within the image rather than fixed descriptions of a single sitter. The resulting scenes invite a double response: recognition of a plausible person or place, followed by uncertainty about what has been assembled. Childhood emerges as a field of imaginative possibility, but also of isolation, vulnerability, and troubled relationships with the surrounding world.

Published by Twin Palms, the hardcover contains 96 pages and 40 four-color plates, with text by Lyle Rexer. Its approximately twelve-by-thirteen-inch format gives the images room to disclose small gestures, objects, and changes in expression. Color helps hold together scenes whose individual components have been brought into a new relationship. Rexer’s contribution accompanies a project in which photographic description and fictional construction are closely intertwined.

The book rewards returning to details that initially seem incidental. A prop or a patch of darkness can alter the emotional balance of a picture without resolving its narrative. Looking becomes an exercise in testing the apparent coherence of the scene. Johan’s invented situations retain enough everyday familiarity to draw the viewer in, while leaving the motives of their inhabitants open to interpretation.
